Meet your driver in the hotel lobby and depart for the Orcia Valley, an area located south of the province of Siena that is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today, you will embark on an authentic journey to discover the hidden gems of Tuscany. Leave behind the crowds and long lines at tourist attractions and immerse yourself in the true Tuscan atmosphere. As you pass through Siena, prepare to be amazed by the unique “lunar” landscape characterized by soft gray-colored hills known as the Crete Senesi. These clay hills are adorned with numerous quaint villages, such as Buonconvento. Take your time to explore this charming walled village and its enchanting corners. Despite its tranquility today, Buonconvento has been historically contested for its commercial significance since the construction of its walls began in 1371. It has also been a must-visit stop along the Via Francigena pilgrimage route. Your day trip will continue to another Via Francigena stop, the picturesque hilltop town of San Quirico in the heart of the Val d’Orcia. From here, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the countryside and marvel at the diverse architectural styles found throughout the town’s many buildings. After your visit, enjoy a scenic drive along winding country roads and undulating hills to your next destination. As you cross into the Valdichiana area, another renowned region of southern Tuscany, the rolling hills of the Val d’Orcia give way to a flatter landscape. This area has been considered essential for its soil fertility and agriculture since Etruscan times. It was during this period, and later in Roman times, that the breeding of Chianina cattle first gained prominence. Chianina is one of Italy’s oldest and most famous cattle breeds. You will have the opportunity to visit a typical farm guided by an expert who will introduce you to the farm’s history and the breeding and farming methods of Chianina cattle and pigs. You will also visit the farm’s laboratories and learn about meat processing. The tour will conclude with a superb tasting lunch featuring local farm products. After lunch, your personal driver will safely transport you back to your original location.
